Jacksonville was founded in 1851 after gold was discovered in Rich Gulch, and it grew into a city of over 1,000 people in under a year. When the Oregon and California Railroad bypassed Jacksonville for Medford in 1884, the town's economic growth stopped, and the original 19th-century commercial district was preserved almost entirely intact. Today Jacksonville is the only National Historic Landmark city in Oregon. The Wine Country Inn sits on North 5th Street at the edge of the historic district, within walking distance of the original storefronts, the Britt Festivals outdoor amphitheater, and the trailheads into the surrounding hills.
