The Boutel™ Standard
We are an editorial guide, not a booking engine.
Boutels is a curated, independent directory dedicated to the preservation, evolution, and celebration of the classic American motor lodge. We do not accept affiliate commissions, properties cannot pay for placement, and we do not list a property simply because it is popular.
When you are on the road, you do not have time to gamble on an average stay. By eliminating the cookie-cutter stays, the interior hallway hotels, and the inauthentic tourist traps, we have built the only map you need.
For travelers, this directory is your compass. For property owners, the criteria below represent exactly what we look for when evaluating a property for inclusion. Every property on this map has earned its place through architectural integrity, design authenticity, and operational excellence.
The Boutel™ Standard: How We Choose
The Boutel™ Standard relies on a rigorous, data-driven evaluation process to separate exceptional, renovated motor lodges from standard roadside stops. Every listed property has survived a strict vetting phase that measures over two dozen distinct data points. From requiring a classic, exterior-door architectural footprint to verifying hyper-local design and analyzing block-level neighborhood data, this stringent screening process removes the guesswork for travelers.
1. The Architecture: The Building Structure Rule
The property must feature exterior room access, no shared interior hallways, and a low-rise footprint of three stories or fewer.
A Boutel™ is not a traditional hotel. A property must maintain the classic exterior-access footprint and cannot exceed three stories. The moment a property becomes a high-rise, it loses the intimacy of a boutique stay. Rooms that open onto interior hallways, the mark of a classic hotel, fall outside the bounds of a Boutel™ as well. Whether it is a single-story drive-up court or a rare three-story lodge elevated for a coastal view (like the Ecola Creek Lodge in Cannon Beach), the autonomy of walking directly to your private door from the outside is non-negotiable. We strictly exclude traditional hotels with interior hallways, shared enclosed lobbies, and vertical footprints.
2. The Grounds: The Outdoor Rule
The property must offer intentionally designed outdoor spaces that encourage guests to gather, unwind, and experience the local climate.
A Boutel™ invites you to stay outside your room. The intention that shapes the interior carries into the open air, so there is somewhere to gather, unwind, and feel part of the place: a firepit to circle after dark, cornhole on the lawn, a shaded gazebo, a porch built for lingering, a trail that starts at the property line. No single one of these is a box to check, but the spirit behind them is not optional. A Boutel™ has a shared outdoor life, not just a parking lot and a row of doors. A property can have beautifully designed rooms and still fall short here, and when it does, that gap is often what places it at Honorable Mention rather than full Boutel™.
3. The Soul: The Authenticity Rule
The property’s aesthetic must be authentically rooted in its local history and landscape rather than relying on generic, imported retro themes.
A true Boutel™ is rooted in its environment. We look for design that acts as a natural evolution of the local history, landscape, and culture. We actively reject “theme-park retro”, which means properties that import a trendy aesthetic into a landscape where it does not belong. A Boutel™ must feel like it could only exist exactly where it is.
4. The Independence: The Anti-Uniformity Rule
The guest experience must be distinctly unique to its specific location, strictly avoiding the interchangeable, copy-paste uniformity of standard chain hotels.
This is about how a property operates, not who owns it. A small group can run several locations and every one of them can still qualify, as long as each stands on its own with its own character and sense of place, much like the River Lodge in Paso Robles California, which is one property owned by Nomada Hotel Group. What we screen out is sameness: the interchangeable, copy-paste stay where you could be in any state in the country and never know the difference. If a property looks, feels, and operates like every other location stamped from one template, it is not a Boutel™. The guest experience must be fiercely independent, and we judge that independence property by property, not by the size of the company behind it. Large national chains rarely clear this bar, not because of their name, but because sameness is the point of how they are built.
The Classification System
Our Road Trip Planner is curated into three tiers. Each designation is earned through editorial review and never purchased.
Boutel™+
The pinnacle of the roadside experience. Immersive, deeply authentic, and flawlessly executed. You don’t just stop at an Elite Boutel™+ on the way somewhere else. You build your entire road trip around it. See how the Inn at Cannon Beach sets the Elite standard.
Boutel™
The heart of our directory. Independent, design-forward, stays that have taken the classic roadside footprint and elevated it with intentional curation, high-quality finishes, and a distinct local soul.
Honorable Mention
The operational anchors. An Honorable Mention earns its place on the fundamentals a long drive depends on: impeccable cleanliness, safety, and service. What it hasn’t reached yet is the elevation of a full Boutel™, whether that’s the shared outdoor life or the design intention inside and out. Not a consolation prize, but a trusted stay with a real path to the full designation.
What Fails to Make the Cut
If you are a property owner seeking inclusion, know that meeting the basic architectural requirement of an exterior private entrance is merely the starting line. It is not a guarantee of a spot on the map.
A property will fail our audit if it compromises on the fundamentals of hospitality. We routinely pass on properties that are operationally deficient. If a property has inconsistent cleanliness, lax safety at the property or in the area around it, or apathetic customer service, it is not ready for the directory. Because a Boutel™ opens straight to the outdoors, where it sits matters: a guest should feel at ease walking to the car after dark and letting their kids explore the grounds. And a property that hides behind a “boutique” name while delivering a standardized, interchangeable stay, or that copy-pastes a retro aesthetic without honoring the local area, will not make it either.
None of this is a permanent verdict. Standards slip and standards rise, so we review our list continually, weighing each property against its most recent twelve months rather than a single moment in time. A stay that falls short today can absolutely earn its place later. Tighten up what was slipping, keep it consistent, and we will see it on the next look. Property owners and road trippers can nominate a property for us to review anytime through our , and if it has real potential, we would genuinely love to watch it get there.
Who Curates Boutels?
Boutels was founded by Sarah Powers out of a genuine frustration with the modern American road trip. After years of traveling the country’s backroads with her family, she realized the best parts of the journey were always the independently owned, character-rich roadside motels. But finding them took time, and she crossed her fingers that the stay would be good.
Today, Sarah leads the editorial review process for every property listed on Boutels. Combining a deep respect for mid-century roadside architecture, admiration of individuals who put in the sweat equity to revitalize an existing property, and a strict demand for modern hospitality standards, she ensures that every designated Boutel™ is a place she would trust for her own family and friends’ travels.
