About Tälta Lodge
The Mountaineer Inn sat on Mountain Road in Stowe through the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, the kind of roadside mountain lodge that defined how people first came to Vermont to ski. When Lark Hotels acquired and rebuilt it, reopening in October 2021 as Talta Lodge, they named it after the Swedish word for 'camp.' The building is positioned between Stowe village and Stowe Mountain Resort, seven minutes from each, on the western bank of the Little River. The design is Scandinavian minimalism applied to Vermont mountain culture. Stowe's skiing heritage has always carried an Alpine and Nordic DNA, from the European instructors who established its ski school traditions to the Austrian Von Trapp family who settled on the hill just up the road. The modular gear walls, the sauna, and the dark wood palette do not feel borrowed from another context. The Stowe Recreation Path runs directly behind the property.

All rooms open to the exterior with their own outdoor space. Ground-floor rooms step directly from their door to the parking lot or to the outdoor grounds; every room, including upper-floor rooms, has a private deck. The nine stügas are the standout accommodation on the property. Stüga is Swedish for cottage, and these free-standing tiny houses on the riverbank have their own kitchenettes, full privacy, and exterior access directly onto the lawn and the Little River. Guests who have stayed in both consistently describe the stügas as the better experience, worth seeking out when planning a return visit.
The Grounds
The West Branch Little River runs along the back of the property, with a wide lawn stretching between the building and the water. Fire pits are spaced across the lawn, stocked with s'mores kits on most evenings during the season. An outdoor hot tub sits at the river edge.
