In 1999 Jack Morey, of the family that built the town's famous amusement piers, bought a nondescript late-1950s motel and turned it into a deliberate demonstration project for the neo Doo Wop movement, reopening it in 2000. Designer Stokes led the reinvention, keeping the era's optimism but pushing it forward: not a museum-piece replica, in his words, but a 21st-century interpretation of the 1950s. The result added a pool, an Astro Lounge, and rooms full of lava lamps, sling chairs, and space-age detailing.
