St. Clair Motor Lodge
13857 Falls of Rough Road
Falls of Rough, KY
Jill Evans drove past this empty 1952 motor lodge for years, then bought it, rebuilt it, and put fresh flowers in every room.
About St. Clair Motor Lodge
The St. Clair Motor Lodge was built and operated by Burl and Mrs. St. Clair beginning in 1952, then passed through several subsequent owners before closing in the early 2000s. The building sat empty along Falls of Rough Road for nearly a decade. Ed and Jill Evans, who lived nearby and drove past the vacant property regularly, decided it was worth restoring. The renovation was comprehensive: new plumbing, bathrooms, electrical systems, flooring, and HVAC throughout. The lodge reopened in 2020 with a design Jill describes as a blend of old and new, all interior spaces with a nod to vintage while incorporating modern conveniences. Kentucky Living named it a 2023 Best in Kentucky winner. Southern Living also took notice. The lodge sits across the road from Rough River Dam State Resort Park, where the lake, boat ramp, and hiking trails draw most guests.
What St. Clair Motor Lodge Is Known For
Jill Evans restored a building that had been empty for almost a decade in a part of Kentucky where boutique lodging does not otherwise exist, and she did it with the kind of specific attention that puts fresh flowers in every room and leads an owner to text a guest with weather safety instructions when storms are rolling in. The Kentucky Living and Southern Living recognition came to an motel in rural Grayson County because the property earned it, not because it had a marketing budget.

- The fully stocked common kitchen, with a griddle, crockpot, two-burner hot plate, and complete cooking equipment, makes the St. Clair Motor Lodge function as a genuine base camp for a Rough River Lake trip, not just a place to sleep between days on the water.
- Rough River Lake is directly across the road, with state park marina access, pontoon boat rentals, and a swimming beach less than a mile away. The lodge makes the lake accessible without requiring guests to find separate lodging on the water.

The Room
Rooms in two configurations. Standard rooms include a mini refrigerator, coffee maker with coffee provided, TV, remote-controlled mini split air conditioning and heat, free WiFi, and outdoor seating for two. Fresh flowers wait on the bedside table in every room on arrival. Deluxe rooms add a kitchenette with kitchen sink and microwave, plus a large private outdoor patio. Each room is individually decorated. Guests consistently describe the interiors as having impeccable taste with thoughtful details at every turn, and each room with its own character. The design vocabulary across the property is vintage-inflected without leaning on nostalgia as a substitute for care.
The Grounds
The lodge sits directly across from Rough River Dam State Resort Park, with the lake and park entrance about one mile away. Two fire pit areas with seating anchor the outdoor social space. Two charcoal grills are available for guest use. Hammocks are set up on the grounds. Active guests will find cornhole, bocce ball, can jam, volleyball, and tennis racquets on site. Boat and trailer parking is available: Rough River Lake is a fishing and boating destination and a significant share of guests arrive pulling something. The shared common room, open to all guests, is fully stocked as a working kitchen: large refrigerator, ice maker, countertop oven, two-burner hot plate, griddle, crockpot, and complete cooking equipment. Sunsets facing the lake valley from the back of the property are mentioned in nearly every enthusiastic review.
The Experience
A stay at the St. Clair Motor Lodge has a specific rhythm guests describe consistently: arrive to fresh flowers, unload the boat or the gear, and figure out what Rough River Lake has in store. Rough River Dam State Resort Park is one mile away, with pontoon rentals from May through October, a swimming beach, hiking on Cave Creek Trail, and enough lawn-game infrastructure to fill an afternoon without leaving the park grounds. Come back at dusk for the fire pits and the sunset from the back of the property. Use the common kitchen for dinner rather than driving into Leitchfield. The Pine Knob Outdoor Theatre is 8 miles down the road for Friday and Saturday nights in summer. Mammoth Cave is under an hour when the agenda calls for something more ambitious. The St. Clair Motor Lodge is the rare find in a lodging landscape that offers almost nothing else in the area: a genuinely considered place that happens to be exactly where you need it.
