Classic motor court bones, record players in every cottage, and Penobscot Bay out the window.

About Seascape Motel & Cottages

Seascape has been on this stretch of Route 1 on the Penobscot Bay shore since 1964, opened as a family-run motor court a few miles north of Belfast's working harbor. For decades it passed between generations of family ownership. In 2022, Alex and Molly Kiesig took over and undertook a full renovation: keeping the low-slung roadside form intact while rethinking every design decision from the signage font and door hardware to the light fixtures, art, and furnishings. They added a vinyl record library of more than 750 titles. Belfast is one of midcoast Maine's most genuinely appealing coastal towns, with a working harbor on Penobscot Bay and a strong food scene. One hundred acres of Fristad walking trails border the property directly.

What Seascape Motel & Cottages Is Known For

The renovation Alex and Molly Kiesig completed in 2022 and 2023 reached every detail of the property: the font on the signs, the door locks, the key design, the light fixtures, the colors, the furnishings, the specialty creamers, the makeup towels. Nothing was treated as an afterthought. The result is a motel that feels deliberately made rather than accumulated over time, and guests notice.

What Guests Love

  • The vinyl record library of more than 750 titles is the property's most memorable touch, with players available in every cottage and borrowable for motel rooms. Guests consistently name specific albums they found in the collection as a highlight of their stay.
  • A heated outdoor pool and hot tub together are uncommon for midcoast Maine, and the combination earns specific praise in reviews from families and couples who treated the pool area as a daily ritual rather than an occasional amenity.
  • The 100-acre Fristad trail system begins directly at the property edge, with coastal woodland paths accessible on foot without driving. Moose Point State Park adds another option just over a mile up Route 1.

Worth Knowing

  • The property fronts Route 1, a busy coastal road. Some cottages and motel rooms face the road and carry traffic noise. Requesting a unit set back on the grounds is worth doing at booking.
  • Seascape is a pet-free property. Guests traveling with dogs will need to look at other Belfast-area options.
  • Summer weekends and fall foliage season fill quickly. Four to six weeks of lead time is advisable for July and August dates.

The Room

The seven motel rooms are arranged in a classic covered drive with at-door parking and a covered porch at each unit, where outdoor dining chairs are set for morning coffee or a quiet evening. Inside each room: a queen bed with new mattress and bedding, a coffee maker stocked with coffee, decaf, and tea, a refrigerator, TV, and a fold-down wall-mounted table with dining chairs. Rooms 1 through 5 and Room 7 have walk-in showers; Room 6 has a full bath. The cottages range from studio to two-bedroom layouts with full kitchens, including stove, microwave, cookware, and everything needed to assemble a proper Maine spread. Larger cottages have separate living rooms with pullout sofas, and each cottage comes with a private deck. A vinyl record player is part of every cottage, with the full library of more than 750 titles available for borrowing from the lobby.

The Grounds

The five-acre grounds slope gently toward Penobscot Bay, with open lawn, fire pits, cornhole, and a badminton net spread across a parklike setting backed by trees. A heated outdoor pool and hot tub occupy a sheltered corner of the property, one of the few such combinations on the midcoast. The 100-acre Fristad trail system begins directly at the property edge and provides immediate access to coastal woodland without a car. A gatehouse lobby market stocks organic snacks, local ice cream, and specialty items on an honor system.

The Experience

The rhythm of a Seascape stay sets in quickly. Mornings begin with complimentary pastries and coffee before guests head into Belfast or down the Fristad trails. Late afternoons belong to the pool, and evenings gather around the fire pits once the sun drops behind the treeline toward the bay. The record players come out properly after dinner: the vinyl library spans more than 750 titles, and picking an album becomes a small ritual that guests mention in review after review. Families come for the pool and the cottages; couples come for the fire pits and the record players. Both tend to come back.
