Brian and Joanna Linton, the founders of United by Blue, a Philadelphia-based outdoor brand built on the belief that business and environmental responsibility belong in the same conversation, opened The Rex in July 2021 after rebuilding the former Tauschman Motel in the Promised Land corner of Pike County. What came back is motel-style rooms with drive-up exterior access and their own outdoor spaces, plus freestanding cabins, arranged on a wooded lot with a private trailhead connecting directly to Promised Land State Park. No lobby, no restaurant, no front desk. The park is the amenity. The Rex earned a Michelin Guide listing. Guests from Philadelphia and New York City, both about two hours away, have been finding it since 2021 and returning in different seasons.

The partner brands at The Rex were chosen with the same deliberateness that built United by Blue. Birch makes organic mattresses. Brooklinen is built for quality over novelty. Black and Brass is a local Pocono roaster, not a pod service. Public Goods uses clean ingredients without the premium packaging markup. The Room

Each unit at The Rex is named for a tree of the surrounding forest. Across all of them the design holds: knotty pine floors, Joybird furniture, Ruggable rugs, and Brooklinen linens on Birch organic mattresses. Smeg coffee makers and kettles are stocked with beans from Black and Brass, a local Pocono roaster. Bathrooms have rainfall showerheads, heated floors, and Public Goods toiletries. Guests specifically call out the sleep quality and the warmth of those bathroom floors on cold mornings as details that lift the stay above what the exteriors suggest. The motel-style rooms range from compact queen rooms to king suites, each with a kitchenette and its own exterior door opening directly onto the shared grounds. The freestanding cabins are a different proposition. The Rae and Hugh each sleep four across two bedrooms, with full kitchens, oversized private patios facing the park, and their own cedar hot tubs. The Arnett is the property's largest: three bedrooms, a full kitchen, dining area, private office, fireplace, and grill, sleeping up to six. For a family or a group booking together, the cabins are the rooms to look at first.

The Grounds

The property sits in a wooded, park-like clearing with views of Promised Land State Park from most outdoor spaces. Every unit has a Solo Stove fire pit and Polywood outdoor seating directly outside its door, with firewood and firestarters already stocked and waiting on arrival. The Rae and Hugh cabins each have a fully private backyard and their own outdoor cedar hot tub. The Arnett cabin has a semi-private outdoor area with a fire pit and grill. The motel-style rooms share a common lawn area toward the front of the property, which guests use for lounging and letting dogs run. The private trailhead is at the edge of the lot, connecting directly to Promised Land State Park with no road crossing required.

The Experience

The operating philosophy is called invisible service, and it holds throughout the stay. Self-guided check-in with an access code arrives by text and email in the 24 hours before arrival. No in-room housekeeping is offered during your stay unless you arrange it in advance. Remote customer service is available by text during the day. The property is entirely yours from the moment you arrive. The Lintons did not arrive at Promised Land looking for a business opportunity. They arrived as the founders of United by Blue, an outdoor brand built on the conviction that wild places deserve stewardship, not just use.
