About Ocean Suites Motel
In 1997, Loren and Dee Griffith began clearing brush from an overgrown property on Lower Harbor Road in Brookings. Over the next two years, Loren built the first suites himself, working seven days a week. When Ocean Suites Motel opened in spring 1999, it started building the reputation it now holds. The motel expanded gradually, reaching 24 apartment-style suites by 2007. In 2015, when Loren and Dee retired, their son Don and his wife Susan stepped in and have kept the same standards in place. The recliner in every suite dates to one of the earliest guests: a traveler with back problems for whom Loren carried a chair upstairs. It became standard and has never changed. Ocean Suites sits at the southern tip of the Oregon coast, seven miles from the California border.
What Ocean Suites Motel Is Known For
Ocean Suites is the top-rated lodging option in Brookings across every major review platform, and the reviews are specific in the same way across four years: impeccably clean, kitchen fully stocked, staff who go out of their way. That consistency across more than hundreds of guest reviews at a 4.7 average reflects a family operation that has never drifted from what Loren and Dee built. The recliner origin story is not marketing: it is the actual reason every suite has one. When a motel's amenities have biographies like that, you are dealing with people who pay attention to the right things.

What Guests Love
- Every suite has a fully stocked kitchen, complete with stove, oven, microwave, cookware, and utensils. Guests who cook their own Dungeness crab from the docks up the street have been doing exactly that for years, and the kitchen makes a week at Ocean Suites a different kind of trip than a hotel stay.
- The recliner in every living room has a founding story: Loren Griffith carried one upstairs for a guest with back problems in the motel's first days, and it became permanent. Finding a specific reason behind a standard amenity is rare. This one is real.
- Don and Susan respond to every review posted, promptly, by name, and they provide a local restaurant guide to arriving guests. Both are specific forms of attention that show up in reviews from guests who mention them as reasons they booked again.
Worth Knowing
- Ocean Suites does not rent to guests who live within 60 miles of the property, regardless of whether they are the primary or additional guest. This is a house policy to maintain the motel's character as a destination property.
- No pets and no smoking in any suite. Both are firm policies. The motel is close to the working port and the policies are consistent with how the property is maintained.
- Front desk hours run from at check-in time to in the evening. Late arrivals should contact the property before arrival; check-in instructions are sent by email within 72 hours of arrival for guests who have made arrangements.
The Room
Every suite at Ocean Suites is an apartment-style layout: a private bedroom, a separate living room with a recliner and a flat-panel television, and a fully equipped kitchen with stove, oven, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, cookware, dishes, and utensils. Flat-panel televisions with more than 70 cable channels are in both the bedroom and the living room; free and Pandora are available through the living room television. All bathrooms have a tub and shower. Free WiFi throughout. Suite configurations run from a one-bedroom layout with a queen sofa bed in the living room, to a two-bedroom layout with an additional queen bed or sofa bed for second guests or children, to a compact Mini Suite with a queen bed and full kitchen in a smaller footprint. Every suite is non-smoking.
The Grounds
Ocean Suites sits at the edge of the Brookings Harbor district, facing the Port of Brookings across Lower Harbor Road. The working port character of the setting is part of what Brookings is: fishing boats, charter operations, the jetty at the mouth of the Chetco River, and the smell of salt water and marine fuel that comes with a real harbor town. The motel's two buildings are low-profile and exterior-facing, with free parking directly outside the suites. Sporthaven Beach is one block south, a wide driftwood-threaded beach at the mouth of the river where the Pacific rolls in past the breakwater. Guest laundry is available on the property.
The Experience
A stay at Ocean Suites runs on the rhythms of the southern Oregon coast rather than the motel's own. Check-in is staffed through the evening; late arrivals coordinate in advance. Don and Susan run a tight, attentive operation: guests receive a local restaurant guide at check-in, responses to questions and reviews come promptly, and the housekeeping standard that Dee Griffith established when she supervised the operation in the early years has never slipped. The kitchen in every suite means guests can buy Dungeness crab from the harbor boats, Dungeness being the main reason many visitors are in Brookings at all, and cook it in the room. Extended-stay guests, fishermen spending a week running charter trips, and road-trippers using Brookings as a base between the California redwoods and the Samuel Boardman corridor all use the motel the same way: as a reliable, fully equipped home that costs less than comparable lodging on the coast and delivers more than it costs.

Things to Do Near the southern Oregon coast
Sporthaven Beach
0.2 miles, about a 5 minute drive, or you can walk.
0.2 miles, a one-block walk from the motel. A wide Pacific beach at the mouth of the Chetco River, flanked by the port jetty to the north and open coast to the south. Driftwood structures built by visitors accumulate at the dry-sand line. Good for long low-tide walks, wave watching, and the harbor and jetty views that the boat traffic makes permanently interesting. Dogs on leash are welcome.
Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor
8 miles, about a 15 minute drive.
8 miles north, the first viewpoint access off US-101. One of the most celebrated and least-crowded stretches of coastline on the Pacific Coast: twelve miles of cliff-top trails, sea stack viewpoints, hidden cobble beaches, and suspension footbridges through old-growth Sitka spruce. Key stops include Natural Bridges, Arch Rock, and Whaleshead Beach. Most viewpoints have short trail access from roadside pullouts and require no special preparation.
Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park
28 miles, about a 55 minute drive.
28 miles south via US-101 into California. A temperate rainforest of old-growth coast redwoods along the Smith River, with some of the tallest trees on earth accessible by short trail from the roadside. The Stout Grove and Boy Scout Tree trails are the most visited. The drive south from Brookings through the Smith River canyon and into the redwoods is itself worth the time.
