The bungalow court that brought South Congress back to life.

About Hotel San Jose

Hotel San Jose opened in 1936 as a Spanish colonial motor court, thrived until Interstate 35 pulled travelers away, and by the early 1990s had fallen into deep disrepair. In 1994 the lawyer Liz Lambert bought the rundown property and, with Lake Flato Architects and landscape designer Mark Word, spent years turning it into something new: a spare, light-filled courtyard hotel that kept the red clay tile roofs, arches, and stucco while stripping the interiors back to polished concrete and white walls. The reborn hotel opened in 2000 and is widely credited with sparking the revival of the entire South Congress district. Its Tex-Mex-meets-Japan minimalism became a defining Austin look. It sits in the MICHELIN Guide, steps from the shops and music venues it helped bring back.

What Hotel San Jose Is Known For

Hotel San Jose is not just a beautiful place to sleep; it is the property that arguably brought South Congress back. Liz Lambert's restoration turned a derelict motor court into the template for a distinctly Austin design language, and the district grew up around it. The bungalow-court footprint, the garden courtyard, and the disciplined minimalism have been imitated across the city but rarely equaled. Its place in the MICHELIN Guide reflects a rare thing: a historic roadside property reimagined with genuine vision rather than nostalgia alone.

  • Jo's Coffee sits in the front lot, so the famous outdoor coffee bar and its I Love You So Much mural are steps from your door.
  • The rooms are studies in restraint, with polished concrete floors and spare white interiors that make the stay feel like a serene retreat.
  • Every South Congress restaurant, gallery, and live music venue is within a short walk.

Worth Knowing

  • The minimalist rooms are intentionally spare and calm; travelers who want a maximalist or heavily amenitized room should know the beauty here is in the restraint.
  • South Congress is lively day and night, so request a room set deeper into the courtyard if you are a light sleeper.
  • Pets are welcome. A pet fee applies; contact the property directly to confirm current amounts and any restrictions before booking.
  • The district books up during festival season and busy Austin weekends. Reserve several weeks ahead for spring and fall.

The Room

The bungalow-style rooms open onto the gardens and courtyard rather than an interior hall, keeping the motor-court spirit intact. Inside, the design is deliberately spare: polished concrete floors, white walls, minimal furniture, and pops of pattern from textiles and vintage concert posters. The restraint is the point, letting light, plants, and the Hill Country materials do the work. Rooms are quiet, comfortable, and calm, dressed in quality linens, with free WiFi throughout. It reads less like a standard hotel room and more like a small, serene retreat set in a garden.

The Grounds

The heart of the property is the central courtyard Lambert and Mark Word carved from the old parking lot, laced with crushed granite paths, wood arbors, climbing ivy, and a lush planting scheme that softens the whole complex. A covered courtyard lounge offers shaded seating and fans, and there is an outdoor pool tucked into the greenery. Out front, in the former parking lot, sits Jo's Coffee, the beloved outdoor coffee bar famous for its I Love You So Much mural. Free on-site parking is available.

The Experience

Staying here is about the calm inside the noise. South Congress hums just past the stucco walls, but the courtyard holds a hush, and guests describe mornings that start with a coffee from Jo's and slow afternoons reading in the shade. The staff are warm and genuinely helpful, the design rewards slowing down, and the location puts every SoCo restaurant, gallery, and music room within a short walk. People come for the aesthetic and stay for the feeling that they have found a quiet garden in the middle of the city's most beloved strip.
