About Hotel Dryce
Jonathan Morris and Allen Mederos both grew up in Fort Worth, and the hotel they built reflects their version of it: not the Stockyards version, not the tourist version, but the city that exists alongside the cowboy mythology. They bought a dry-ice factory on Byers Avenue in 2018, designed it in the exterior-corridor motel format from the start, and filled it with art commissioned from local BIPOC artists through a $4,000 grant program with Art Tooth. The custom beds and woodwork were built by a Fort Worth craftsman. The Oaxacan rugs reference the Mexican cultural influence that shapes North Texas. Hotel Dryce sits half a block from Dickies Arena and within walking distance of the Kimbell Art Museum, the Amon Carter, and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.
What Hotel Dryce Is Known For
Hotel Dryce partnered with Art Tooth to award $4,000 grants specifically to Black and Indigenous Fort Worth artists: Adam McKinney, Brenda Ciardiello, Guillermo Tapia, Jean Fernandes, and Niki Dione, whose work now fills the lobby and rooms. Co-owner Jonathan Morris was deliberate about why: 'People of color are traditionally underrepresented in Fort Worth hotel spaces. It was important to showcase these artists who are so important to the fabric of our city.' The building still does one thing it was built to do, too: it still sells dry ice.
