About Driftwood Inn
Peggy Wood moved her family from Atlanta to Mexico Beach in 1970, and the Driftwood Inn has been on this stretch of the Florida Gulf Coast ever since. The property has rebuilt twice: once after a fire in the 1990s, and again after Hurricane Michael came ashore in October 2018 and left Mexico Beach nearly unrecognizable. The Wood family rebuilt from the ground up, keeping the birdhouse-themed design that guests had returned to for decades while upgrading every room and shared space. The family declined to sell to developers after the hurricane and chose to rebuild as it had always been. Mexico Beach sits on the Forgotten Coast, roughly 20 miles southeast of Panama City Beach.
