A group of creative women reinvented this roadside stay in color, keeping the original 1960s tile bathrooms and adding a hand-painted mural wall that keeps growing. Borrow pickleball paddles for the courts next door, cool off in the seasonal pool, and drive five minutes to the Lake Michigan shore.

Northwoods Lodge

Indian River, MI

A 1950s roadside relic with a famous spinning steel ball, reborn in logs and pine so a real tree stands in the corner of the room and the bed frame is hewn from timber. The firewood is already stacked at the bonfire pit when you arrive, and mornings start with waffles before the water or the trails pull you outside.

Rooms take their names and color schemes from vintage candy brands, with exterior doors in blue, yellow, orange, and green. The furniture inside is built from dock lumber reclaimed from the lake half a block away.

Renovated in 2021 by local owners and set right at the park edge, with a fire pit and s'mores kits at the center of it. The vintage bones were worth keeping.
